The security phase in Ituri is such that we have to have military escort whenever driving out of Bunia. I cannot even begin to tell you how strange this feels for me coming from an NGO background living and working with nationals. Now, I am always having a heavily armed soldier on my side when driving or walking through villages with people living their ordinary lives. Getting the escort for a mission means a lot of negotiating, not only just to coordinate the escort, but also to then convince them that they should bring a lunch box. My first mission with escort we had to cut short because of rain that made it impossible for the APCs to drive further, the next one we had to cut short because the soldiers had to be back in time for lunch. And the mission that we planned for next week was cancelled in spite of being suggested by the Banbatt themselves...
